The Xavier's Commerce Society (XCS) is the representative society of the Department of Commerce of St. Xavier's College, Kolkata. The society strives for the progress and intellectual mastery of every undergraduate commerce student within the college.View XCS Annual Report 2014-15
The Xavier's Commerce Society was formed with the motto"Dreams. Development. Destiny." in March 2006.
- Dreams symbolize the aspirations and desires of a person. The society encourages everyone to dream big and helps them to strengthen their abilities so as to enable them to give flight to their dreams and fulfill their desires.
- Development stands for the process of gradual advancement from the stage of aspiration to the stage of achievement of one's dreams. XCS helps its members to develop useful skills which they will require to accomplish their goals in the corporate sector.
- Destiny refers to the fate of a person's life. At XCS, we believe that a person's destiny is not predetermined but it is in his hands to shape his future. XCS strives to develop certain traits in its members which will help them convert their dreams into destiny.
- To act as a synonym to professionalism and a body that believes in the quality of the events.
- To ensure and provide fair and maximum participation of the commerce students in seminars and events in Kolkata and elsewhere.
- To ensure each event has an educational/guiding/training purpose to it and that each of them is fulfill led.
- To provide all its members an equal opportunity to not only learn and grow individually, but also as a team.
- To appreciate and mutually respect the hard work, initiative and dedication of all its members.
The Xavier's Commerce Society was formed with the motto 'Dreams.
Development. Destiny.' in March 2006. It is with this motto that the society has been striving to develop the dreams of Xaverians in order to help them reach their destiny. The society by organizing holistic events throughout the academic year ensures that every student is taught critical lessons before stepping into the Corporate World.
The year 2014 for the Xavier's Commerce Society began with the 6th Chapter of our annual National level Management Fest, "INSIGNIA" with the theme "Transcending Realms".. Each year, it aspires to revisit certain aspects of life and celebrate them during the two day festival with the finest minds from across the country exhibiting their talent and skill and this year was no different. A completely new event called "Insignia Nationals" was introduced this year where we had open entries for two events Business Quiz and Business Plan. The prelims were held completely online and we received over 600 entries from across the country. The fest saw a special session by the comedian Papa CJ, which was a major hit among the students. At the end of 2 days of intense competition in different managerial aspects, the team from St.Xavier's College emerged overall winners followed by Christ University, Bangalore.
The academic year 2014-2015 commenced with a weeklong knowledge saga "INNOVISION" from 14th to 18thof July with the tagline :"Where dreams take flight", holding various career oriented seminars that helped students explore corporate culture and trends. The workshops, being the best means of resource and knowledge sharing, help the new entrants warm themselves in the clasp of the corporate stream. This year Innovision lured the students in the lines of Group Discussion and Personal Interview, Advertising, Start ups, Career in Management, Global Financial Careers, Photography and Graphology to name a few.
Inception, as the name calls, is an exclusive first year warming event which spreads its wings to the BBA and Economics departments. Inception primarily aims to introduce the new entrants with the fest culture providing a realistic insight and practical exposure to the present day business ways and means. Hosted on the 25th and 26th of July, it was seasoned with various rounds on Group Discussions, tests on Marketing, Human Resource, General Awareness and a personal interview, with an excellent stream of participants which formed a strong pool of champions for the events to follow.
Every year a group of students of the Commerce Department are sent to factories of indiscriminate companies to get a depth into the actual mmanufacturing processes as part of our initiative called "X-PEDITION". This year's visits included a visit to the "ANMOL BUISCUITS" factory on the 13th of
August,2014 and to the "EMAMI PAPER MILL" on the 9th of September 2014. Both these visits provided a valuable experience to the students to gain knowledge about their manufacturing processes.
X-Calibre,is our Intra- College Business Fest, which focuses on developing soft skills,leadership, thorough practical implementation of theories and business knowledge. It is a replica of Insignia at the college level.Auditions were held from 5th to 8th August to guarantee a better competition for the final. X-Calibre 2014 consisted of ten events, Best Manager, Public Relations, Corporate Quiz, Human Relations, UN Mock, Finance Manager, Entrepreneurship, Marketing,Corporate Treasure Hunt and International Relations. International Relations was a completely new event introduced at this year's X-Calibre.The event was held on the 20th and 21st of August with an array of onstage rounds and off stage rounds. This year we saw a record turnout at the event msurpassing all past records. XCalibre being suggestive of the grandeur regulates the in-house team building and a platform for the participants to gain experience before our inter college fest, Insignia.
Intelligentsia is a panel discussion that brings together the best minds from various corporations and organizations to debate and critique burning issues that require reprisal and reflection. Intelligentsia is accompanied by the launch of YouThink, the annual journal of the Commerce Department of St. Xavier's College. Intelligentsia 2014 was held on 11th September 2014. The topic for this year's panel discussion was "Conservative Past,Careful Present, Hopeful Future : Chalking out a Roadmap for India". We were privileged to have some eminent speakers representing different spheres of corporate life. We had Mr Ravi Todi, Chairman, Shrachi Group from the Business world, MrAshwani Kumar, Chief Technologist, ITC ltd talking from the technology point of view, Dr. SurendraMunshi,Professor, IIM Calcutta, from the academic aspect and Mr Manish Tewari, former Union Minister, representing the political world. The discussion was moderated by MrUtpalChatterjee, former high Sheriff of Calcutta.
The panel discussion is accompanied by the launch of our annual journal "YOUTHINK". This year we released the ninth volume of Youthink, the theme for which was "CONTINUUM". The topic for the panel discussion was in synchronization with the theme of YOUTHINK.Youthink reaches a new milestone every year which comprises of notable articles authored by students and professors alike and interviews of industrial luminaries from India and abroad. The interviews of this year included those of Mr Shiv Khera, renowned author and motivational speaker, MrAshwinSanghi, author and MrArvindPanagariya,Indian - American economist and professor at Columbia University.
Any organization needs a strong support system in the background in the form of the administration to attain success. The Xavier's Commerce Society would like to thank Rev. Fr.Dr Felix Raj,S.J. our Principal and President of XCS in a special way for his constant encouragement. Rev.Fr.Dr.Dominic Savio,S.J, our Rector and Vice Principal for being actively involved with the society and for his support in going forward with all our ideas and efforts to develop the society and its events. Dr. Madhusree Mukherjee and Prof AmitavaGhose are two pillars without whom, participation from evening would have become difficult.The entire faculty of B.Com Morning and Evening need to be thanked in a special for helping in our endeavours whenever needed.
What began around eight years past as a meeting point for like-minded youth has now evolved into a pro-active community dedicated to inculcate in today's commerce students the skills and talents required for excelling in the corporate world. Much has been done, and much progress has been made. Yet there is far more to do, far more to accomplish, and the path to progress leads us forward every day. As we approach our final event for the academic year, Insignia 2015, we hope to reach new heights and continue with our goal of developing young minds in helping them realize their dreams and ultimately reaching their destiny.
