Ph.D. Programme Coordinator
September 2015 was another landmark in the history of St.Xavier's College, Kolkata. The college was granted permission by the University of Calcutta to independently initiate a Ph.D. program in the departments of Physics, Microbiology, iotechnology and Commerce. This makes St. Xavier's one of a very select few colleges in the country to be allowed this privilege. It is a recognition by both the University of Calcutta and the University Grants Commission that St. Xavier's has the merit, quality and academic pedigree to undertake and supervise research.
Prior to this, teachers of these departments were registered as doctoral supervisors under the University of Calcutta. As supervisors working under University rules, they could guide or act as co-guides to Ph.D. students registered under the University of Calcutta. The permission to run an independent Ph.D. program in St. Xavier's College is significant in that it empowers the faculty of the four Departments to supervise Ph.D. work of research scholars registered with the College, following the Ph.D. regulations of St. Xavier's College formulated according to the University Grants Commission and approved by the Senate of the University of Calcutta.
St. Xavier's College had introduced its Ph.D. program from the session 2016-17. The Ph.D. Committees of Physics, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Commerce have been constituted with the Principal as the Chairperson of each committee. Aspiring research scholars can enrol themselves as Ph.D. scholars of St. Xavier's College after qualifying the Research Entrance Test (RET) conducted by each department. Successful candidates will have to undergo Course Work for one semester as prescribed in the St. Xavier's College Ph.D. Regulations. Following the Jesuit tradition of encouragement and support to the underprivileged and marginalised, St. Xavier's College will provide scholarship to a single deserving non- NET scholar in each of the four departments, for a maximum of three years.
The final Ph.D. degree will be awarded by the University of Calcutta, the affiliating university, after evaluation of the Ph.D. thesis by experts and the successful defence of the same by the scholar. The motto of the college is Nihil Ultra - Nothing Beyond. Fr. J. Felix Raj, SJ, Principal of the College, has taken that motto very seriously as he fructifies his dream of founding St. Xavier's University. His mission has also been to lift St. Xavier's College to new levels - opening new departments, undergraduate and postgraduate, and finally pushing for the Ph.D program. Without his vision, inspiration and determination this landmark would never have been realised.
