The Goethals Indian Library and Research Society

The year 2013-14 has been a witness to a number of events at the Goethals Indian library and Research Society. A number of researchers from other universities and from places outside Kolkata and also from other countries have visited the library. Several books of Indological interest have been purchased during this period.

Career Oriented Programme (COP)

St. Xavier's College, Kolkata received the sanction from UGC to introduce certificate and diploma courses under Career Oriented Programme (COP). Five such courses were launched in 2006. As an autonomous college, St. Xavier's is permitted by UGC to offer certificate and diploma courses.

The Jesuit Fathers of St. Xavier's College proposed application of computer training and computer awareness programme in the field of information technology in 1985. With the support from a generous alumni and other like minded people, St. Xavier's Computer Centre was inaugurated on 4-th November 1985 on the occasion of 125th Anniversary of the College.

Observatory

The St. Xavier's College Observatory (SXCO) has been recently christened Fr. Eugene Lafont Observatory The former observatory was erected in 1875 and was equipped with an 8'' (200 cm) Cooke Refractor telescope on German equatorial mount with achromatic doublet for solar spectroscopic and planetary observations by Father Lafont (S.J), a key figure behind the propagation of science in post-renaissance Bengal.

Leadership Training Service (L.T.S) is a 55 year old youth movement, mainly for students in schools and colleges. Initiated in 1959 by five students of Goethals Memorial School, Kurseong, the Movement now provides leadership training to student leaders in three South Asian countries - India, Nepal and Bangladesh.
