Ever since Computer Science was first introduced as an additional subject in class XI in the year 1995 the Department has come a long way. The B.Sc. with Honours in Computer Science was introduced in the year 1998. Our College is one of the pioneering institutes to begin the B. Sc. Course in Computer Science. Since its inception the Department has produced University toppers in all the years till 2008 after which the College started producing batches as an autonomous institute. The year 2005 proved to be a hallmark for the Department as M.Sc. (Computer Science) course was introduced as the first autonomous course of the College and it was the first autonomous course among all Colleges under the University of Calcutta.
With rapidly evolving technology and the continuous need for innovation the Department has always produced quality professionals and research fellows working in both India and abroad. The students of both undergraduate and postgraduate courses are well placed through on-campus and off campus placement drives. Students have been placed in reputed IT companies like Odessa Technologies, CTS, IBM, RS Software etc. Many of the students opt for higher studies and have enrolled themselves in reputed Universities/Institutes in our country like Pune University, NIT, Jadavpur University, IIT, etc. some of them have been selected for scholarship programmes in international universities such as Oxford, University of Nice, Manchester University, Kings College UK etc. The students of our Department have continued to bring us glory. Several of our students have successfully published papers in well acclaimed peer reviewed journals and presented papers in national and international conferences.
The curriculum is prepared to suit the requirements of the industry and research organisations and is continuously upgraded. Seminars, workshops and invited lectures are organised on a regular basis to keep up with the latest trends and technologies. The teachers are continuously and enthusiastically contributing to the academic and research fraternity by publishing papers in peer- reviewed journals and presenting research papers in many international and national conferences. Teachers are also involved in Research Projects sponsored by UGC and other agencies, adding academic value to the Department.
The Department is actively involved in the development and implementation of ICT facilities in the College. Some of the faculty and staff members have immense contribution towards the ICT advancement of the College. Thus the Department reaches out beyond its academic commitments to facilitate the overall functioning of the College with respect to the utilisation of technology, both in teaching-learning and administrative operations.
The Department is committed to its endeavor to deliver the best and groom men and women who would in future ensure that St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata keeps on shining in the academic and industrial world. We strive to produce computer professionals with sound technical and analytic brain, possessing a human face, who would contribute to the building of our Nation.
