Interdisciplinary Research

St.Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Kolkata has always patronized interdisciplinary research as the focal point of its research vision. The college has always encouraged interdisciplinary research, beyond the divisions of science or commerce or humanities departments. The college has always conducted interdisciplinary international symposiums, research meets, social welfare activities, philanthropic activities, entrepreneurship development activities, and research projects. Keeping this vision in mind, International Conference on Climate Change: Global Coorperation, was organized as a collaborative effort from all the departments. The focal themes for the said conference were climate change, environmental sustainability and incidences of climate migration. Scientists, professors & dignitaries from renowned institutions like IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, New York University, University of Texas, University of Calcutta, Jawaharlal Nehru University, IISER-Kolkata, DMLI-United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia and many more  were invited for their keynote addresses. The keynote lectures, panel discussions & competitions inspired the students, faculties & research scholars to expand their knowledge base.

The college has always encouraged the students, faculties & research scholars to participate in various National & International Seminars. Around 60 students participated in oral & poster presentation category of the 108th Indian National Science Congress, Nagpur. The participants were greatly benefited with the valuable comments by the respective judges & dignitaries. To encourage climatic awareness & environmental sustainability  the students, faculties and research scholars of Departmentof Microbiology, B.com (morning) & B.Com (evening) participated in an Indo-Bangladesh Bilateral conference hosted at the Khulna University, Bangladesh by the Institute of Ecotoxicology & Environmental Sciences (ICEES). The participants were conferred with various awards like the ICEES Young Scientists Award, ICEES Best Poster Award, ICEES Best Oral Presentation Award & many more. Dr. Arup Kumar Mitra, Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology was conferred with Honorary Fellowship Award at the very same conference. Post conference the students were taken to a tour into the biodiversity reserves of Bangladesh Sunderbans. This approach has greatly benefited the students, faculties and research scholars to developing multifaceted insights about various other subjects apart from their own specialization.

Various works are currently ongoing conglomerating different departments like microbiology, biotechnology, physics, chemistry, department of commerce etc. The Department of Biotechnology, GOI has granted two different grants to boost interdisciplinary research work in the college. The DBT Star College grant has been sanctioned to the Department of Microbiology, Department of Physics & Department of Chemistry for boosting and up-scaling of undergraduate level research works. As a boost for conducting interdisciplinary high-ended research activities, the Department of Microbiology & Department of Biotechnology were conferred with DBT-BUILDER Research Grant. Further, Department of Microbiology, along with the Entrepreneurship development cell & Enactus India, have taken up philanthropic activities to help marginal people of Sunderban regions and also aiming to boost startup culture among budding researchers in the college. 

St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Kolkata has always envisioned research for the betterment of society as their prime motto. The college has strict research policies and has designated research advisory committees for checking the originality of ideas and subsequent improving the research standards. Patenting of the new innovations by the research scholars is highly encouraged by the college as it boosts the intellectual morale of the researchers and adds to the reputation of the institution. The research scholars, faculty members & students have published a large number of research articles various national and international peer reviewed journals from various coveted publication houses like Taylor & Francis Press, CRC Press, Elsevier, Springer, De gruyter and many more. Apart from publications in national & international peer reviewed journals, the college has also aimed at incorporating the college journal “ Avishkaar”  in UGC-Care List is one of prime research goals for the college research units. 

Faculty Student Research

Moreover the research scholars, faculty members & students have published a large number of research articles various national and international peer reviewed journals from various coveted publication houses like Taylor & Francis Press, CRC Press, Elsevier, Springer, De gruyter and many more. To upscale interdisciplinary student based research in the Department of Biotechnology, GOI has granted DBT Star College to the Department of Microbiology, Department of Physics & Department of Chemistry for boosting and up-scaling of undergraduate level research works. Further to boost student centric high-ended research activity, the faculties have involved both undergraduate & postgraduate students in different projects sanctioned under DBT-BUILDER Research Grant. This has largely helped the students to develop a research-based mindset, which has further helped them to pursue higher studies and aim for higher goals.
