St. Xavier's College scores 3.77 CGPA out of 4 (A++) in its 3rd cycle accreditation.

The Principal said: "It is the fruit of a collective effort. I want to thank our staff, students, their parents, alumni/ae, benefactors and friends for their wholehearted cooperation, interest and involvement in the College matters. This is yet another milestone in our march towards Nihil Ultra (Nothing Beyond).

St. Xavier's University gets Vice-Chancellor


Father Felix Raj, SJ, the principal of St. Xavier's College, Kolkata is the first vice-chancellor of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata.

"As vice-chancellor, my first task will be to form the Governing Board of the university, which will consist of 36 members,"Felix Raj said, adding that he would take over the reins of the Rajarhat University with "immediate effect".

Father Jeyaraj Veluswamy, SJ, the chancellor of the university who appointed Fr. Felix Raj as VC, also appointed professor Ashis Mitra as registrar.

The bill for setting up the university, which is operational from February 8, the date of notification, was unanimously passed by the Assembly on December 15. Governor K.N. Tripathi gave his consent to the bill on January 16.

The Governing Board, which will include a state government nominee and a UGC representative, will meet for the first time on the University campus on April 28.

"St. Xavier's College, which gave birth to the University, kept its quality for 157 years and has become the number one college in India with 3.77 CGPA out of 4. The university will emulate that. It will in no way compromise on quality," Fr. Felix Raj told the press.

The university will start its journey by offering the B.Com, BBA, M.Com, MA in English, Masters in social work and MA in journalism courses.

Firdausul Hasan, honorary secretary, St. Xavier's College Calcutta Alumni Association, said: "The university is the materialization of Father Felix Raj's visionary dreams. We are thankful to him for giving us the chance to play our part in Vision 2020 and do something for our alma mater."

The St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, Bill, 2016, was unanimously passed in the West Bengal Assembly on 15th December 2016 paving the way for setting up the University at Rajarhat.

It is a historic moment for all Jesuits in Bengal, and St. Xavier's in particular. I would specially like to thank the Chief Minister, the Government of West Bengal and all the legislators for being supportive to our cause. Mangalam Camp For Village Children

"Mangalam Camp" was organised by the Department of Education in collaboration with the Departments of Computer Science, Chemistry and Political Science on 18th and 19th of February 2017. The project aims at motivating and enriching the less fortunate children of two villages adopted by the Department of Education in Howrah district. The "Mangalam Camp" was a part of the Mangalam Project which is an initiative of the Xaverian Education Society (XES) of the Department of Education.

Our Principal, Rev. Fr. Dr. J. Felix Raj, S.J. inaugurated the camp and Fr. Shekhar, the Parish Priest of Santragachi was the Chief Guest. The inaugural ceremony was graced by the Rector, other Vice Principals, Deans and Professors of St. Xavier's College, Media Personnel, Principals of other institutions and the students from the villages adopted by the Department.

In his welcome address Fr. Principal highly appreciated the novel endeavour of the department under the leadership of Prof. Swati Sarkar, Vice-Principal of the Department of Education. He also emphasised on the academic nature of the project. The Chief Guest Fr. Shekhar, in his speech, complemented the Vice-Principal, Prof. Swati Sarkar, for the uniqueness of the "Mangalam Project", where the student-teachers are specially mentored to impart quality education in a structured manner to less fortunate children, throughout the year.

The two-day long camp offered the children of the village schools an opportunity to gain better understanding of the application of theoretical subjects like Mathematics, Social Science, Physical Science, Computer and Language Learning and personality development. With the help of the advanced facilities and infrastructure of the college the children learnt about new technologies in a fun-filled yet intellectually stimulating way.

There were also sessions for Celestial Observation, Citizenship Training, Reasoning and Psychological Testing alongside recreational activities like art and games. On Sunday evening, the Camp ended with a beautiful closing ceremony and the departure of the children was mixed with the promise of a long and joyful association with the Department of Education of St. Xavier's College in the coming years.

Shishu Mela 2017

The Shishu Mela 2017 was held on Sunday, February 12 by the department of Social Work and NSS of St. Xavier's College. Around 800 children from ten villages adopted by SXC and nine NGOs attended the Mela. The inauguration was adorned with a beautiful dance by the XADAM team.

250 NSS student volunteers under the able leadership of NSS director, Ms Cheryl Francis efficiently organised the Mela. The Chief Guest for the day was Fr. Xavier Jeyaraj, former director of NSS unit of St. Xavier's and the secretary of social secretariate of the Jesuit Curia in Rome.

Kadam, the NSS magazine was released by Frs Xavier Jeyaraj and Felix Raj.

Fr. Principal thanked ma'am Cheryl Francis and the student volunteers for their hard work and wonderful coordination of the Mela.

Annual Sports 2017

The annual sports day of St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, celebrated on February 4 at the College ground, was colourful with spirited performances.
Rev. Fr. Jeyaraj Veluswamy, Provincial of the Calcutta Jesuits and the Chancellor of the St. Xavier's University, Kolkata graced the day as the chief guest.

Faculty members and students in their respective departments actively participated in the March Past led by the BSF Band. The large turnout, the festive mood and the pleasant weather were the perfect boost for all on the day.

Exabyte 2017

 

The Department of Computer Science organised its two day Tech-Fest, Exabyte 2017 on February 7th and 8th. Fr. Principal congratulated the department and acknowledged their enormous contribution and value addition to the College. The first volume of the department's magazine X-Cryptus was released at the inaugural session.

The Chief Guest and the keynote speaker on the 7th evening was Dr. D. P. Duari, Director, MP Birla Planetarium. Prof. Shalabh Agarwal explained the dynamics of the programme and Dr. Ashoke Nath gave the vote of thanks.The programme was well attended by the students of the department.

The Tenth Convocation held at SXC

 

The Tenth Convocation and Valedictory was a solemn occasion of celebration on July 17 at 12.30 pm. Father Rector offered the inaugural address as he welcomed all. He introduced the audience to the vision and mission of the College.

Honourable Minister, Dr. Partha Chatterjee reiterated the principles and purpose of Higher Education and congratulated St. Xavier's College for pioneering the noble task of imparting knowledge beyond the barriers of cultural, social and religious inequities.

Father Principal, in his address and annual report, highlighted the salient achievements of the College over the last one year. He observed that the stride towards the University is an awareness of the role of St. Xavier's in extending its scope to a larger section of students. "St. Xavier's is the work of God and we have His blessings to continue our service".

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta, Prof. Ashutosh Ghosh delivered the convocation address, welcoming the students into the fraternity of higher educational pursuit.

Father Provincial presided over the ceremony, invoking the holy presence of the Divine in every act and gesture of each Xaverian.

1972 students received their degrees, 7 professors were felicitated for achieving Ph.D. degrees and 21 gold medals instituted by various stakeholders were given out to students with extraordinary merit and academic credentials.

The XADAM presented a short cultural programme.

Why Xavier's

St. Xavier's College is a 157 years old institution with rich heritage and long tradition.

As a Jesuit Higher Educational Institution, it aims to form men and women for others, with fundamental human and spiritual values.

The tiny seed has grown into a mighty tree from 83 students in 1860 to 7,853 students in January 2016.

The College functions in three shifts : morning, day and evening, offering UG and PG courses in Humanities, Science, Education, Commerce and Business Administration.
