The Jesuit Fathers of St. Xavier's College proposed application of computer training and computer awareness programme in the field of information technology in 1985. With the support from a generous alumni and other like minded people, St. Xavier's Computer Centre was inaugurated on 4-th November 1985 on the occasion of 125th Anniversary of the College. The importance of the Computer Centre cannot be overstated in the present context. In the existence of more than 29 years, it has continued to outgrow its own role. It started as a centre for students of the College and later embraced general students too through the various courses it conducted. Twenty five years ago it was probably one of the very few centres for computer training in Calcutta. In the year 1995, the College was able to offer Computer Science as a subject for H.S (Science) students and Computer Applications for HS (Commerce) and HS (Arts) students because of the excellent facilities and faculty members of the Computer Centre. Under the supervision of the Computer Centre, the college launched the B.Sc (Hons.) in Computer Science in 1998. Later, the Computer Science Department was started and also offered M.Sc in Computer Science in 2005. The fact that the staff members at St Xavier's College are computer literate and the various processes are automated, including online admission, is testimony to the dream and vision of the Jesuit Fathers at St. Xavier's a quarter of a century ago. Since the inception of Computer Courses by Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in 1991, the Computer Centre is acting as the practical centre providing facilities and infrastructure for such courses to IGNOU.
