Applications are invited for the post of Research Assistant for a Research Project sponsored and hosted by the St Xavier's College (Autonomous), Kolkata

Project Title:

Problems and Prospects of Crop Diversification: A Study of Purba Bardhaman District and its Neighbouring Areas in West Bengal

Crop diversification has emerged as a critical strategy for enhancing agricultural sustainability and addressing socio-economic challenges in the Burdwan (Presently Purba and Paschim Bardhaman) district of West Bengal, India. The proposed study will explore the region's opportunities and sustainability implications of crop diversification initiatives. Burdwan district of West Bengal, India, predominantly relies on rice cultivation, which is constrained by a number of environmental, social, and economic issues.  In response, there is growing recognition of the need to diversify agricultural practices to ensure long-term food security, livelihood resilience, and environmental sustainability. This research proposal aims to investigate the feasibility and benefits of promoting crop diversification in West Bengal, particularly Burdwan district (as Burdwan is called the granary of Bengal), to enhance agricultural resilience and livelihood security. This study will employ a multidisciplinary approach, integrating quantitative primary data analysis from field surveys. It will examine the opportunities driving crop diversification in Purba Bardhaman district and its neighbouring areas in West Bengal and evaluate its sustainability dimensions, considering economic, social, and environmental factors.

Position Details:

Research Assistant: One (01) purely temporary and consolidated basis @ Rs. 10000/- per month

Project Duration:

10 months with effect from the 9th May 2024. The appointment will be on a three-month renewable basis.

Essential Qualification:

Master’s degree in Economics or allied discipline. Having knowledge in Statistical / Econometric packages and living in the survey area(s) will be preferred.

Collaboration between St. Xavier’s College and Tata Medical Centre, Kolkata

St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Kolkata in collaboration with Tata Medical Centre will be introducing three different courses in the form of one year post graduate diploma in Molecular Medical Microbiology, Medical Physics and Nuclear Medicine. The first two courses will be in collaboration with the PG Departments of Microbiology and Physics. The third one will also be delivered in collaboration with the PG Department of Physics and it will be developed only after finalization of the syllabus. The courses will also involve inputs from the Department of Statistics.

 These courses will have 8 seats each and the target audience will be students having post graduate degree in the fields of Microbiology, Biotechnology, Physics and other fields of biological sciences. These courses will involve two semesters in blended mode in St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Kolkata and the Tata Medical Centre, Kolkata.

 It is a perfect blend of theory and practical components involving cutting edge technology in the fields of Biological sciences and Nuclear Physics and there will also be a compulsory dissertation paper followed with internship. The course will act as a finishing degree in the fields of Microbiology, Physics and Biotechnology and will definitely increase the employability of students. These courses will also involve placement assistance and paid internship.

St. Xaviers College ( Autonomous ) Kolkata celebrated International Labour Day on 1st May 2024 . Rev Dr Dominic Savio , SJ , Principal felicitated the members of the support staff the college in presence of Rev Fr Jeyaraj Veluswamy , Rector , Vice Principals , Jesuit Fathers and Alumni members .

In his address, Fr. Principal highlighted the invaluable role played by the support staff in maintaining the smooth functioning of the college. He emphasized their dedication, hard work, and selflessness, which often goes unrecognized. Fr. Principal expressed gratitude for their tireless efforts, underscoring how they contribute significantly to the college's mission and its vibrant community. He encouraged everyone present to continue fostering a culture of appreciation and respect for all members of the Xaverian family.

The celebration was followed by fellowship lunch at the College Canteen .
