Rangmanch – One-Act Play Competition- On 6th Feb, 2026, the department, in collaboration with the Electoral Literacy Club, organized Rangmanch, a one-act play competition aimed at promoting electoral awareness through theatrical expression. Participants addressed themes such as ethical voting, representation, populism, and democratic accountability.
Constitution Day and E-Magazine Launch- On 26th Nov, 2025, the department, through the Electoral Literacy Club, commemorated Constitution Day with the launch of the third issue of the quarterly e-magazine, Voices of Democracy. The issue, themed “My Vote, My Issues”, emphasized constitutional values, civic rights, and the significance of voting as an expression of popular sovereignty. The initiative reinforced students’ understanding of constitutional ideals and democratic participation.
RANN NITI – Electoral Strategy Simulation- On 5th Aug, 2025, the department organized RANN NITI, a real-time electoral strategy simulation conceptualized by the Electoral Literacy Club. The event familiarized students with the strategic dimensions of electoral politics, including campaign management, voter outreach, political communication, and crisis handling. The programme also witnessed the launch of the second issue of the quarterly e-magazine, Voices of Democracy, focusing on media, youth, and democracy in contemporary India.
Agla Sawaal and launch of ‘Voices of Democracy’- On 11th April, 2025, the department, in collaboration with the Electoral Literacy Club, organized Agla Sawaal – The Ultimate Civic Showdown, a quiz-based event aimed at enhancing students’ understanding of Indian polity, elections, and current affairs. The programme also marked the launch of the first issue of the ELC’s quarterly e-magazine, Voices of Democracy, themed “Ideal Voting for All.” The event was preceded by a special lecture on Colonial Legacy and Indian Administration by Shri Priyabrata Roy.
Voter Awareness Week Observance- On 19th–22nd March, 2024, the department, through the Electoral Literacy Club, organized Voter Awareness Week in collaboration with the Department of Social Work and the National Service Scheme (NSS). Conducted as per directives of the Election Commission of India, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the programme included poster making, essay writing, slogan writing, and interactive discussions. Themes such as “Chunav ka Parv, Desh ka Garv” highlighted inclusive voting, youth participation, women’s representation, and civic responsibility.
Suffragium–Sansad 2024 – Annual Youth Symposium- On 16th and 17th Feb, 2024, the department organized Suffragium–Sansad 2024, its annual youth symposium featuring a Youth Parliament (Lok Sabha deliberations) and a Press Committee. The central agenda was the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023. Additional segments such as Ballot Battalions, Knowledge Knockout, Dramatique, and Final Bout enriched the programme. The event concluded with the launch of the 8th edition of the department’s interdisciplinary journal, Politique and provided experiential learning in legislative procedures and civic engagement.
Formation of the Electoral Literacy Club (ELC)- On 27th Feb, 2024, the department spearheaded the formation of the Electoral Literacy Club (ELC) of St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Kolkata, with the objective of promoting electoral awareness and informed democratic participation among students. Established in alignment with the vision of the Election Commission of India, the Club aims to inculcate the values of Adarsh Matdaan (ideal voting) among young and first-time voters. The ELC serves as an institutional platform for systematic dissemination of knowledge related to electoral processes, constitutional rights, and civic responsibilities
Research Scholars’ Presentation - On 19th Jan, 2024, the department conducted the 4th venture with Dr. Pradipto Roy, Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. His lecture, titled “Emerging Perspectives in Mental Health: Interdisciplinary Concerns and Methodological Challenges”, examined contemporary developments in mental health studies with emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches and methodological complexities.
National Seminar and Extempore Competition- On 3rd August, 2023, the department organized a National Seminar and Extempore Competition titled “Nationalism in Colonial Bengal: Remembering the Unsung Heroes” in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and the Institute of Social and Cultural Studies. Scholarly deliberations and student participation encouraged historical reflection, critical engagement, and public articulation of ideas.
On 25th February 2023, Ms. Megha Marik, Assistant professor, Department of Sociology, Xavier’s College, Kolkata spoke on ‘Shifting boundaries of the Home: Exploring the gender dynamics of housework and employment of IT employees in West Bengal’. The department aims to continue in its journey of promoting research excellence in the years to come.

On 17th and 18th February 2023, the department organized its annual flagship event Sansad ’23 culminated in two simultaneous events: the Youth Parliament and the Press Committee. Aimed at cultivating the ‘the leaders of our tomorrows’, Sansad is a seamless enactment and pioneer in higher standards of government, opposition, and press interaction in the Indian polity. While the set agenda for Sansad ’23 was the deliberation upon ‘The Indian Law regarding Classification and Identification of Criminal Detainees and Convicts’ with reference to the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act 2022, themes of the human rights, right to privacy, criminal investigation, punitive politics, and freedom of dissent, provided multi and inter-dimensional deliberations in proceedings. The fourth pillar of democracy was well represented in the Press Committee. In line with house policy, the press delegates each produced an opinion piece on the agenda, and corresponding beat articles on both days of parliamentary proceedings. The committee engaged in a separate debate on the motion of ‘Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter is a step towards the Freedom of Speech on Social Media’, whereupon both proponents and opponents sparred through three engagements: a round robin, questioning session and the summation speech.
On 9th November 2022 Ms. Mayuri Banerjee, a Researcher at the Institute for Defence Studies & Analyses. New Delhi spoke on Remembering 1962 war: War Memory and Trust-Deficit in India-China Relations.
On 28th September 2022, Mr. Avishek Jha, PhD Scholar at the University of Melbourne, Australia spoke on Young People’s Affective States, Agency, and Inequalities in Meerut, India,
The department has initiated a platform to invite research scholars from diverse fields of the discipline who would present before our students their research experiences and different ideas to explore.
On 27th September 2022, a special lecture to commemorate the 250th birth anniversary of Raja Rammohun Roy was organized. The speaker was Sudipta Sen, Professor of History and Middle East/South Asia Studies at University of California, Davis. His talk was titled A distant promise: Rammohun Roy’s final days in England.
The department of Political science organized a National webinar on the Emerging Trends in the Party System in India on 24th March, 2022. The speaker was Manisha Madhava, Associate Professor. and Head, Department of Political science, SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai.
On 31st March, 2021 the fourth webinar was organized on “Emerging Trends in Public Policy” in which Rumki Basu, from the Department of Political Science, Jamia Millia Islamia New Delhi spoke on the Topic: “Public policy and governance challenges in the Post-COVID era”and Prof. Dipankar Sinha, from the Department of Political Science, University of Calcutta spoke on the Topic: “Public policy communication in India: A missing link?”
