The Short Stories of Ashim Roy: selective observations

Press Visit & Study Tour

  1. In 2018, The students of the Fifth Semester visited Jadavpur University Press, where they were initiated to the various processes related to Letter Press, Offset and Digital Printing and Book Binding. The visit was followed by a very enriching lecture by Professor Abhijit Gupta, addressing various issues in Early Printing in Bengal and contemporary trends in the studies in Book History. The tour and the lecture were attended by the students from both campuses of the college.
  2. The department organised a tour of Santiniketan for the final semester Under-Graduate students of the department between 22 and 24 February 2019. The students visited the Rabindra Bhavan Museum and Archives and the Uttarayan Complex, followed by a dedicated walk to appreciate the sculptures of Ramkinkar Baij and the celebrated fresco by Benod Behari Mukherjee at Hindi Bhavan. Later, they were escorted to the Shanibarer Hat, a rural make-shift market place for traditional crafts and Kankalitala, an ancient religious site dedicated to the Mother Goddess.
  3. As a part of the curriculum, the students of third year, both from Raghabpur and Park Street campus, visited Saraswati Press, Kolkata in September 2019. This press is one of the finest amongst Asian countries. The students were accompanied by the concerned professors from both campuses. They were helped to have a practical and thorough knowledge with the printing technology.
  4. The department organised three-day study tour to Murshidabad for the outgoing batch of UG & PG Students of the department from March 3 to 5 2023. In the span of the couple of days, the students explored the palatial mansions, historical monuments and religious sites of Murshidabad. The students accompanied by their professors visited the famous Hajarduari Palace, Katra Masjid, Madina Masjid, Jafargunj, Kathgola Garden House, Jagat Seth’s House, Nasipur Palace, Kiriteshwari Temple, Rani Bhabani Temple, the tombs of Mirzafar and Ajimunnesha, Don Bosco Church, and many other places of rich historical significance. A tour across these sites left a significant impact on minds of the students—the history of Bengali literature seemed to come alive in these places as these sites are intricately related to the origin and proliferation of medieval Bengali literature and the literary history of nineteenth century Bengal.

Literary Meet

A literary meet named ‘Sahaj Pather Asare’ has been organised from the Department of Bengali on March 1, 2023. All of the students and members of the literary club joined this meet.

Outreach Programmes
