An international seminar ‘Frontiers in Biological Sciences’ is organized by Department of Microbiology every year since 2017.
Department of microbiology conducts a two-day student seminar every year since 2004. Students of undergraduate 2nd year and postgraduate 1st year organize the seminar titled ‘Modern trends in Microbiology’. The seminar includes lecture presentation by renowned scientists, oral and poster presentation by the students.
Department of Microbiology along with department of Physics and Chemistry received DBT Star College Grant of Rs. 62 Lakhs for 2019-2022. Students of all the three departments are involved in small research projects, teachers conduct and take part in faculty development programs.
Department of Microbiology & Biotechnology have received an Interdisciplinary Life Science Program for Advanced Research and Education in 2021 for 5 years (Total Amount Sanctioned. Rs. 2,67,26,826/. Sanction No. BT/INF/22/SP41296/2020). A part of the fund has been utilized to procure high-end instruments and to build a state-of-the-art facility.
The research projects that are being carried out in department of microbiology under this project are ‘Biology and Applications of Polyextremophilic Microorganisms’ (Dr. Arup Mitra) and ‘Identification of major microorganisms (sp. antibiotic resistant) present in natural habitats viz. wastewater, human gut, spices, and use of plant secondary metabolites, pre- and probiotics as an alternative to combat them and to boost up human health’.
Isolation and characterization of economically important secondary metabolites from plants (Dr. Sudeshna shyam Choudhury, Dr. Jaydip Ghosh, Dr. Anindita Banerjee)
Isolation and Identification of major antibiotic resistant microbes from environmental wastewater samples using metagenomics screening and design potent inhibitors using virtual screening of medicinal plant library against them (Dr. Mahasweta Mitra Ghosh)
Evaluation of synergistic effects of prebiotics and probiotics on GI tract related disorders while creating awareness among general population (Dr. Madhumita Mitra Ghosh, Dr. Kasturi Sarkar)
Characterization of indigenous microflora of some Indian spices; study of several parameters that involves degradation of spices on storage; simple, cheap, and easy ways to preserve them. (Prof Debjani Dutta)
