Problems and Prospects of Crop Diversification: A Study of Purba Bardhaman District and its Neighbouring Areas in West Bengal
Crop diversification has emerged as a critical strategy for enhancing agricultural sustainability and addressing socio-economic challenges in the Burdwan (Presently Purba and Paschim Bardhaman) district of West Bengal, India. The proposed study will explore the region's opportunities and sustainability implications of crop diversification initiatives. Burdwan district of West Bengal, India, predominantly relies on rice cultivation, which is constrained by a number of environmental, social, and economic issues. In response, there is growing recognition of the need to diversify agricultural practices to ensure long-term food security, livelihood resilience, and environmental sustainability. This research proposal aims to investigate the feasibility and benefits of promoting crop diversification in West Bengal, particularly Burdwan district (as Burdwan is called the granary of Bengal), to enhance agricultural resilience and livelihood security. This study will employ a multidisciplinary approach, integrating quantitative primary data analysis from field surveys. It will examine the opportunities driving crop diversification in Purba Bardhaman district and its neighbouring areas in West Bengal and evaluate its sustainability dimensions, considering economic, social, and environmental factors.
